Tide and Current Taxi

Tide and Current Taxi by Marie Lorenz

June 23, 2019

Pier 101, Governors Island

The Tide and Current Taxi is a rowboat taxi in New York City operated by Shandaken: Governors Island resident Marie Lorenz. Each trip is planned to coincide with strong tidal currents in the harbor, and documented online. Tide and Current Taxi, which has been in operation since 2005, uses plywood boats that are designed and handmade by the artist. The project provides an unexpected view of the harbor while the boat and its passengers become part of the landscape—floating with the tide to create something new out of something familiar. This tidal voyage unlocks secret geographies in the city's shifting network of passages, made from the interaction of manmade and planetary forces.

On June 23, Shandaken is pleased to present an edition of the Tide and Current Taxi that explores the currents and eddies surrounding Governors Island. Reservations for this program are free, but extremely limited and required to attend. Unfortunately no reservations remain, but interested parties are welcome to sign up for the waitlist.

New York-based artist Marie Lorenz has been exploring and documenting urban waterfronts for many years.
