Shandaken: Catskill brings artists 120 miles north of New York City for free room, board, and use of our print and publication studio.
This program, now in its third season, welcomes one artist at a time for one to four weeks each. It is available to individuals at all levels of familiarity with printmaking and bookmaking techniques. Artists are welcome to attend in order to acquire new skills, plan or create a new project, or print a project for which prepress is complete.
Artists in residence live in a private apartment that is a 5-10 minute walk from Shandaken's studio. They are offered intensive training in our equipment and publication-making upon arrival if needed/desired, followed by unstructured, 24-hour access to our 550-square-foot print studio and hands-on technical support at key moments in their process for the duration of their stay. Residents are invited to make a public presentation about their work at the conclusion of their term.
Residencies are offered in the following configurations: one week, two weeks, three weeks, one week followed by an additional one-week return trip, or two weeks followed by a one-week return trip. Return trips give participating artists an initial opportunity to explore the possibilities of printmaking and bookmaking, become accustomed to the studio's equipment, and make experiments with specific techniques and substrates; followed by a subsequent opportunity to make final prints or books, allowing for an interval of prepress time in a home studio.
All artists who are interested to make books, zines, or prints are welcome to apply, but those with a focus on regionally specific cultural practices, queer methodologies, and climate are especially encouraged.
The third application cycle of Shandaken: Catskill is available through Sept 30, 2025, for opportunities from October 2025 through May 2025. This program is open to cultural practitioners of all career levels with the exception of current students. Candidates are encouraged to carefully review our FAQs before completing their application.
This program is supported by The New York State Council on the Arts.
