Shandaken Projects is pleased to announce the exhibition of Yard Sign by Acacia Marable, at Wyckoff Avenue and Starr Street, Brooklyn. Yard Sign references the proliferation of virtue signaling in America and prompts questions about its practical outcomes.
The first yard sign to feature the text “In this house we believe..." was made by Kristin Garvey, a Wisconsin woman, the day after Trump was elected president in 2016. The sign went viral, and Garvey set up mechanisms for sale proceeds to support ACLU. When production management became too large a task, responsibility for the sign and receipt of its proceeds were gifted to the Wisconsin Alliance for Women’s Health. Soon, knockoffs flooded the market, enriching individuals through their sale. Marable's work reproduces Bertolt Brecht's "Writing the Truth, Five Difficulties" in the style of these signs.

Acacia Marable (b. 1988) is an artist working, primarily in painting and drawing, between NYC and LA. He is interested in using play, humor, and failure to explore the personal and mundane aspects of life and how they shape the multiplicity of emotion and experience. He is currently pursuing an MFA at the University of California Riverside.
