Pillow Talk with Michael Bühler-Rose and Dr. Patrick Crowley

Pillow Talk with Michael Bühler-Rose and Dr. Patrick Crowley

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

The Bhakti Center

5 First Avenue, New York, NY

Shandaken Projects is pleased to invite you to an evening of spectral stories and practical advice for ghostly goings-on.

Dr. Patrick Crowley, an art historian who specializes in depictions of the supernatural in Ancient Rome, will present some ancient Western depictions of ghosts and other supernatural beings. He will narrate a casual history of human understanding of otherworldly phenomena from Classical times through the Modern era.

Then Michael Bühler-Rose—artist, critic at RISD, 2012 resident, and ordained Brahmin priest whose work investigates ritual and mysticism—will lead a workshop about near-Eastern exorcism practices, and teach mantras to protect oneself in case of ghostly emergency.

This Pillow Talk will take place at the Bhakti Center—a nonprofit cultural space devoted to reviving the divine qualities of the self though the experience of literature, art, drama, music, and dance.

Shandaken Projects' ongoing series of "pillow talks" are intimate discussions with former residents and special guests. Eschewing the traditional slide lecture format, these presentations focus on residents' realms of inquiry rather than illustrated histories of their object-making.
