Governors Island

Shandaken Projects is pleased to announce the inaugural season of Shandaken: Governors Island, a new residency program that allows one artist at a time to live and work on Governors Island for up to six weeks each. Shandaken is proud to have been selected by The Trust for Governors Island as the first organization to offer long-term accommodations on-island since 1997. This unprecedented opportunity will debut its first open call application cycle in September 2022.

Shandaken: Governors Island brings artists to a site simultaneously embedded within and set apart from New York City, for free room and board, studio space, and print studio usage. Residents live in a private apartment inside of Shandaken's multi-use headquarters in the Nolan Park section of the island, with extended island access privileges including early morning and late night ferries, grocery and package delivery, and after-hours roaming. Residents are offered unstructured, 24-hour, exclusive access to a 200-square-foot studio just down the hall from their living quarters for the duration of their stay, and are invited to make a public presentation about their work once their term has concluded.

Expanding on the organization's signature process-focused residencies, Shandaken: Governors Island welcomes artists who intend to use this opportunity to complete a particular labor-intensive project in any medium; to utilize our printmaking equipment for any purpose; or for open-ended studio-based experimentation.

Located in the heart of New York Harbor between Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn waterfront, Governors Island is an unparalleled place for cultural practitioners to work. An eight-minute ferry ride away from Downtown Manhattan, the island boasts 172 acres of public parkland, historic architecture, and wide-open views. It holds a uniquely important place in the history of New York, and is home to a robust cultural program. Shandaken is pleased to provide introductions to other on-island organizations if such conversations are of interest to residents.

The current application cycle of Shandaken: Governors Island will offer opportunities from December 2022 through May 2023. This program is open to cultural practitioners of all career levels with the exception of current students. Because this opportunity is very different from the other residencies and programs on the island, it is very important that all candidates carefully review the description of our facilities and FAQs before completing their application. The next application cycle for this annual opportunity will be offered in summer 2023.

This program is supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
