About Shandaken: Governors Island
Shandaken: Governors Island is a free, studio-based residency that takes place on Governors Island. Each resident is given a private studio for one year each. The island—and hence the residency itself— is only accessible by a ferry that usually runs 7a to 6p weekdays, with very limited weekend service.

The residency
The 2018-19 residency season will take place October 15 through September 30. It is open to all cultural producers who currently live in New York City. The primary focus of the program is residents' individual studio goals. Residents are asked to attend up to two, one-hour-long meetings per month and create a public program, discussed below. A first, mandatory meeting for resident orientation will be held on-island on Monday, October 1, from 1 to 4 pm. At the end of their term, residents may prepare a brief describing their experience of and insights about the island and its future, to share with Shandaken and the Trust.

The public program
Each resident will be asked to produce a new, ephemeral work to be presented in person each Saturday for one month in summer 2019. I.e. one resident will present their program each Saturday in May, another will present theirs each Saturday in June, and so on. The scale and format of public programs is open however they must focus on the context of Governors Island and residents must be present when their own is offered.

Studios are between 120 and 220 square feet and come equipped with a small desk and chair. Please see this page for more details.

There is a $25 fee to apply. This covers the cost of application software, administrative fees, and jury meetings.
