Proposing a Possible Subject

Proposing a Possible Subject is a hands-on walking workshop considering the ways Storm King’s collection and physical grounds contract and expand an audience’s sense of edge and body. Facilitated by Alex Velozo ('17), participants will explore the ways in which these works speculate bodies to co-inhabit their worlds. By investigating representation, physical material, and social-spatial organization, we will ask how sculptural objects propose their own subjects, and can this expand the material imagination of a body?

This program is ideal for kids and adults ages 12 and up.

This program is presented with Storm King Art Center as part of their ongoing Wanderings and Wonderings series. Initiated in 2013 by the Storm King Art Center, Wanderings and Wonderings invites visitors to engage with artists in creative and unexpected ways. Participating artists have created tours, maps, performances, poetry and movement workshops, new media, and deeply thoughtful conversations. Since 2015, Wanderings and Wonderings has been co-presented with Shandaken: Storm King, and features select alumni and their collaborators.

Alex Velozo is a sculptor and educator based in New York City. They received their BFA from Cooper Union in 2014. Their work aims to use sight, naming, and recognition to destabilize the bounds of legible subject-hood. This practice investigates acts of reading and its inherent erasure and expansion; whether reading an identity, artwork, image, text, or translating between. Velozo currently co-organizes and curates XW collective; has been part of the group shows Traces at The Vault (2017), Expansion Foam at 67 Ludlow Gallery (2015); and were recently in residence at Shandaken: Storm King (2017).
