Signals in the Landscape

Signals in the Landscape is a movement-based performance that travels through Storm King Art Center's North Woods, interacting with Daniel Buren’s group of ten green-and-white-striped benches that function doubly as seating and as art objects. Responding to Buren's simple cubic design and site-specific approach, the dancers construct solos, duets, and trios of slow-moving, shape-shifting, temporary sculptural compositions on the benches and in the spaces between. The movement score loops in a circular pattern along the path, the bodies becoming part of the overall ecology. Viewers are welcome to drop in and out of the performance throughout the day.

This program is presented with Storm King Art Center as part of their ongoing Wanderings and Wonderings series. Initiated in 2013 by the Storm King Art Center, Wanderings and Wonderings invites visitors to engage with artists in creative and unexpected ways. Participating artists have created tours, maps, performances, poetry and movement workshops, new media, and deeply thoughtful conversations. Since 2015, Wanderings and Wonderings has been co-presented with Shandaken: Storm King, and features select alumni and their collaborators.

Phoebe Berglund is an artist based in NYC. She uses choreographic methods to create situations that consider relationships between object/subject, animal/human, human/machine. Berglund earned her MFA in Combined Media at Hunter College and is the recipient of the Leutz/Reidel Fellowship at the Universitat der Kunst Berlin. Recently she has presented her work at MoMA PS1, Villa Empain Brussels, The Center for Performance Research, Movement Research at Judson Church, NADA NY, Material Art Fair Mexico City. Berglund was a 2018 Shandaken: Storm King Art Center Artist-in-Residence.

Juli Brandano, collaborating with Berglund on the May 11 and Sept 7 performances, is dancer and choreographer based in Brooklyn, NY. She has performed in work by Cally Spooner, Phoebe Berglund, Alexandra Pirici, Amelia Heintzelman, Ayano Elson, and Jodi Melnick. Her work has been presented at Triskelion Arts, the School of Contemporary Dance and Thought (Northampton, MA), and Brooklyn Arts Exchange.

stormy budwig, collaborating with Berglund on the May 11 performance, is an international dance artist, social ecologist, and resistance strategist living and working. Starting in the fall she will split her time between Montpellier, France at the "exerce" Masters program and Brooklyn, NY. She takes her time, converses and listens deeply, and, on occasion, runs hastily into oceans, projects, and open spaces. budwig’s work is sited, rooted, emergent, and absolutely hopeful. Amelia Heintzelman, collaborating with Berglund on the Sept 7 performance, is a dance performer and maker based in NYC, originally from the Midwest. She has presented work at Triskelion Arts, Lubov Gallery, Chez Bushwick, CPR, and School of Contemporary Dance and Thought in Northampton, Massachusetts. She frames her long term collaborative process with Leah Fournier under an imaginary company name, Middle Space Dance. www.ameliakh.com
